The cell phone has become the world’s most popular, and most common, electronic accessory. Some of use them in place of land lines, while for others they’re merely an additional way to communicate. We give them to our elderly parents, and we use them to monitor our children. Some people even install one-way cell phones in their dogs’ collars. The sending and receiving of text messages has become a normal method of communication, and we’ve made the noun, “text” into a verb, referring to the practice as “texting.”

Sadly, for many of us the cell phone isn’t merely a tool, but an instrument of death and destruction. I you think this is an exaggeration, glance over these points:

1. Nearly 25% of all car accidents are caused by drivers talking on their cell phones.
2. 20% of all adult drivers in the United States send text messages while they’re driving.
3. A 2007 study of 1,200 average drivers found that 73% of them talked on cell phones while driving, while 19% sent texts.
4. According to the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), 10% of drivers are on some kind of cell phone at any hour of the day.
5. A study by the IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) found that drivers who use cell phones while behind the wheel are four times

With numbers like that, it’s no surprise that so many states are implementing safety regulations which restrict the use of cell phones while operating a vehicle.
Despite the increasing possibility of getting a traffic ticket for chatting between (or during) lane changes, we continue to do it, which is why the company Safe Driving Systems ™ has created a new product. According to the creators, Key2SafeDriving (K2SD), which is compatible with most cell phones and cell phone plans, has the following key features:

• It’s easy to install: It doesn’t require any tools, and takes only a few minutes.
• It doesn’t put you in danger: Even when your system is in safe-driving mode, you can still make calls to 911, or to other numbers you’ve specified via the admin panel.
• Multiple profiles: Do you have a teenager who borrows the car? You can block their access to calls and text messages, and get a report on what numbers they actually dial. You can even get reports on every driver, to see who’s “cheating” the system.

After all this, you’re probably wondering how K2SD works. It’s actually pretty simple: when safe-driving mode is engaged, all calls to your phone are sent directly to voicemail, and all texts receive a reply stating that you are driving and will respond when you arrive at your intended destination.

It’s natural to be skeptical that such a device is necessary. After all, we’re all capable of turning our phones off – we know how to do that, or we’d be routinely kicked out of movie theaters – and yet, despite the fact that we all know the danger, despite the fact that we’ve seen the report which rates talking on a phone as risky a behavior as driving drunk, 81% of us still do it.

Key2SafeDriving may not be an option we like, but it’s absolutely a device many of us need.
